Don’t let the score fool you. The University of Mississppi Lady Rebels only pulled away down the stretch to outscore the Southern University Jaguars women’s basketball team to beat them 66-53 last Monday.
In both teams opening game of the season, the Jags traveled to Oxford, Miss. to fae the Lady Rebels in a run-and-gun shootout led by the 19-point effort by senior guard Tommie Walden.
Southern tied the game at 38-38 with 12 minutes left in the game, but failed to capitalize until the 6:42 mark which was a jumper by Walden.
The Jags have never won against an SEC team under head coach Sandy Pugh, and this is the first meeting between Southern and Ole Miss since 1995. But Pugh doesn’t feel as if this has set the team back. If anything, it has given them ammunition to move forward.
“…As far as this game, I thought we were ahead of the curve and positioned to win it,” said Pugh. “We just ran out of juice…”
Pugh is getting the squad ready for their December 11 meeting with Houston Baptist University, which is set to start at 6 p.m. The ladies’ confidence levels have risen in their play and practice and the squad collectively feels that they are set to win another SWAC Championship.
“As far as the play in the game, they did an outstanding job. Anytime you play an SEC team, you are really doing something…” said Pugh.
” But a lot of people have been having doubts about them and it has sort of gotten into (the players) their heads. But after the game and through the last practices…they are ready.”
The ladies will also be ready to receive their 2002 SWAC Championship rings before their game against Houston Baptist. There will be a ring ceremony that will begin at 5:30 p.m. Also, 2002 SWAC Player of the Year Jacklyn Winfield is tentatively scheduled to attend the ceremony.
