NEW ORLEANS – With the exciting list of pre-Bayou Classic activities, the State Farm “Super Job Fair” was an event worth attending. Every year students and non-students come to the job fair, dressed for success with resumes in hand, hoping to obtain employment.
The event was held Friday, November 29 at the Hyatt Regency from Noon-5 p.m.
This State Farm-sponsored event included companies such as Entergy Cooperation, New Orleans Police Department, Honda and Ford, just to name a few. All together there were 46 companies in attendance.
Most students complained that the job fair was not large enough and most of the companies were geared mainly towards engineering and law enforcement majors.
” The Super Job Fair is just not big enough, but it is still a beneficial experience,” said Tonya Harding, a New Orleans native.
“The Job Fair is a great experience. I just wish more people would have come,” said Latonja McNeil, a native of Florida and a general studies major at LSU.
Many of the company representatives had many positive things to say about the annual event. Some, like Aggie Williams of the Greater Expectations Foundation Inc of New Orleans, were there for more than to just recruit potential employees.
“We have been coming here for six years to promote healthy lifestyles for young adults and teen mothers. Every year has been an enjoyable experience. This Job Fair not only helps students, but it provides a great venue for companies to interact,” said Williams, director of the program.
Colleges and universities were also in attendance in hopes of recruiting future students.
“This is our 12th or 13th year here and we have had many success stories from students who came here, met us and now attend Southern University Law Center,” said Andrea R. Love, Director of Recruitment Services at the Southern University Law Center.
Despite the attendance being low, the job recruiting event proved to be an opportunity for students to network with companies who could prove to be beneficial to their lives before and after graduation.
