Because education is a top priority, Cox Communications of Baton Rouge has created a special rate plan to help provide greater high speed Internet access to college students. Southern University student, faculty, and staff can begin receiving that price advantage starting in the spring semester 2003.
The Cox “College Rate Plan,” which discounts Cox High Speed Internet service to just $25 per month, comes online for Southern University in January 2003 following completion of on-campus network construction.
“We believe that access to these high tech alternatives will help in student recruitment and retention,” said Jacqui Vines, Cox vice-president and general manager. “Our area shouldn’t take a back seat to no one when it comes to the advantages that technology has to offer.”
This will allow Southern University to have the same advantages as LSU students, faculty, and staff.
The College Rate Plan was first tested at LSU in recent month under the name “Geaux Box” and has proven to be a great success and useful technological tool.
For SU, the service will be marketed as the Jag Box. Off-Campus students, SU faculty, and staff will not only be able to surf the Internet at higher speeds; they will also have special software to access designated campus hard drives through a secure virtual private network (VTN).
The Jag Box service will be available only to full-time and part time SU faculty, staff, and students living off campus. Students living or working on campus are already provided with Internet service through the SU Network.
Students, faculty, and staff can order the Jag Box service beginning Monday, January 6, 2003 through a link provided at www.subr.edu. Representatives will also be on campus in the union on January 13-17, 2003 during Spring Registration.
