(Digest News Service) – The Holy Grill, a food service program of the Greater Baton Rouge Federation of Churches and Synagogues, has recently relocated to Scotlandville in the Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church at 1414 Sora Street.
The program will serve a free hot meal at noon on weekdays throughout the year to those in need, beginning the week of June 17.
The Holy Grill joins a sister program, Kid’s Café, which opened in March at the Scotlandville church. The Kids Café, operated in cooperation with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, now serves 75-100 children with a hot late afternoon meal. Tutoring and nutrition education are apart of the program.
“The Holy Grill, which operated at two locations in Zion City for the past fifteen years, has served thousands of individuals in need,” said Rev. Day. He noted a reduction in the number served forced the Board to reevaluate the best use of resources. “Some days the Center’s numbers dropped into the teens. We attribute some of the decline to welfare reform, particularly the requirements for individuals to find work or be enrolled in training by 2001.”
Rev. Day said the Federation would continue to provide outreach services to Zion City particularly in the area of health education. “We will also work with the Community Development Corporation to assist resident,” he added.
Volunteers from the Federation’s fifty-three congregations will continue to assist with the operation of the Holy Grill. Additional volunteers and organizations are needed to serve meals and to support the continuing work of the Grill.
