As an incoming freshman at Southern University and A&M College; I have witnessed many housing issues. I am currently housed in Ulysses Jones Hall, a male dormitory observing many issues. In this facility in particular, the toilet doesn’t flush properly, the shower doesn’t produce any hot water, the sink pressure for the water is remarkably low, the washer and dryers are broken, the floor tiles are breaking, and the air condition doesn’t get cool at all. During orientation this summer, I was housed in Camille Shade Hall an upperclassmen female dormitory. The shower walls were filled with hair, the storage cabinets were broken, and many of the keys weren’t functioning properly, as well as the general upkeep of the bathroom. Throughout my first 3 weeks of school I have visited Bethune Hall a male dormitory. Entering the building a horribly bad smell almost suffocates you. The floors were flooded, the public water fountain was filthy, and there were large amounts of urine on the bathroom floors. With the positive mindset that things may get better and maintenance may improve with the help of the housing staff, I currently await the day where these problems are a thing of the past. Housing should improve on some of the decisions they are making for the students! As an incoming freshman I feel there are certain things that we should not have to witness. We pay a high amount of tuition to stay in these dorms, a place many of us are supposed to feel comfortable enough to call a second home for a period of time, and there isn’t enough quality compare to our original residences. Most nights I try to sleep comfortably, but with the noise of the box springs underneath are a little to unbearable for me, as I toss and turn in the middle of the night hearing squeaky noises. I also feel that my RA’s paly a very important part to upkeep of the dormitories as well. When a problem may occur I should look forward to there help and have no problem notifying them of the incident so they can make a better arrangement for the students as well as myself. I am looking forward to some big changes happening with the dormitories soon. Students deserve to have a better place of living! For example, washing and drying shouldn’t cost students anything, but since we are forced to pay, we shouldn’t have to beat along the side of the machine for it to accept loose change. A fine of $150 will cost if you are caught doing any of the school violations on campus. Questions still remain from my personal view of the dormitory. Why are the toilets still not flushing correctly? How long will it take to fix the dryers and washers for students to have a better experience in college, and feel more at home? When will the female dormitory Totty, have their emergency door fixed or replaced for better access? Why are the cameras not working in most of the dormitories for students’ safety? I am looking forward for answers to all my questions from the staff, or anyone on campus that can answer. As I complete my freshmen year I hope all problems are solved in a safe matter and in high quality. I “Alex Williams” will search day and night seeking for information about the housing issues on the campus. Experiencing housing issues wasn’t as I thought it would be but for my curtsy, I will do my best to ensure most problems will be addressed at most, with my help from the housing authority as well.
