This upcoming weekend the Southern University Football team will be taking on their biggest rival in the SWAC the Jackson State University Tiger Football Team who is number one in their Division of the SWAC. With all of the records that the team players are breaking this season they are sure to win the game this upcoming weekend. With Lenard Tillery leading the SWAC in rushing with 538 he is bound to put up a bunch of scoring in this upcoming game. The Quarterback for the Southern University football Austin Howard has been passing major distances for the Jaguars with it being an average of 248 yards per game.
It has been two weeks since the Jags football team stepped foot on any football turf due to back-to-back bye weeks but like any other game this season, they are looking forward in taking “the W” as they ready themselves for the Jackson State University Tigers (JSU). The Tigers, who’s overall record (2-3) and conference record (2-1), also had a bye last week and are coming off two-game winning streak after come from behind victory against Mississippi Valley 16 – 14. This matchup will be an intense “battle of felines” as the SWAC’s leading scoring offense of the Jags (41.2) clash against the SWAC’s 2nd rank total defense of the Tigers (363.4).
Even with the Jaguars starting their season very slow in the first game against University of Louisiana Monroe losing to them and then the next game playing Tulane University and losing to them as well those two games still was not an impact on the Jaguars SWAC conference ranking due to those two team not being in the same conference as Southern. But the next week for the home opener the Jags went ahead and surprised the world with the beating the Alabama State University Hornets who is a part of the SWAC conference making this the first SWAC win for the Jaguars which made them (1-0) in the SWAC and overall (1-2), but the surprisingly with all of the good playing the team had been doing in that home opener the Jaguars went to Alabama A&M and destroyed them and made the SWAC record (2-0) and the overall record (2-2). So this is the game which is going to decide if the Jags will break their overall win lose record from (2-2) to (3-2).
The Jaguars have been putting in a lot of work on there off week to make sure that the do not lose the momentum the have going into this next game against Jackson State University. This matchup is so important to the Jags because Jackson State 3 years ago was going head-to-head with the Jags and won the season matchup, but in the SWAC championship there was a very different result with the Jaguars coming out with the victory and ever since then the Jags have never lost to the Tigers again. There is so much on the line because every year the football team strives to be even better than the prior year. So there will be a different playbook when playing this game, With Coach Dawson Odums at the head of this team, they are more than ready to destroy Jackson’s team with their tremendous playing. “I’m excited. It’s always a great
environment there. We’re eager to get on the field with them. They are a decent team with a great coaching staff, great coaching staff, and great defense. We’re just eager to see what we’re going to do with them,” Herbert Edwards, Junior Running Back from New Orleans Louisiana.
So make sure that you make that trip to Jackson State University on October 15, 2016 and support the Jaguars as the overpass those tigers in scoring and make this game their third SWAC win this year.
