Several emotions resonated and domestic abuse statistics were discussed at “I love the way you lie”, Tuesday.
The Association of Women’s Students and the men of the Beta Sigma chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated hosted the forum in T.T. Allain.
Domestic violence shouldn’t happen to anybody. Ever. Period.
“Domestic violence is completely out of control. It is like a disease spreading rapidly without treatment,” said Sharen Carter, guest speaker.
Carter along with Durward Craig, Mental Health Counselor at Southern University Counseling Center provoked responses from students about domestic violence.
“I hope you are listening and visualizing so you can carry it out to your families, friends, and neighbors to get the community informed,” said Craig referring to domestic violence.
Craig reiterated domestic violence is not a male or female thing. It is a human thing.
“Domestic violence is one of America’s best kept secrets because it’s not dealt with. If it’s not dealt with it manifests,” said Craig.
He described the situations and examples of domestic violence and called it, “the elephant in the room.” Everyone knows it’s there but walks around it and avoids addressing it.
Carter said, “Anyone can plug in domestic violence into Google and find information. As a friend let someone in that situation know about their choices. People too often just walk away.
Carter and Craig presented examples of domestic violence cases that resulted in death, rape, and other criminal acts.
The audience was touched by the stories and took away insight into situations that they are strong enough to help solve.
“This is a sad epidemic that must stop. In order for it not to become silenced, everyone must learn to speak up. Learn the signs, educate others, and love yourself enough to leave if need be,” said Ja’el Gordon.
This was the second event in AWS’ week of events to promote walking a mile in women’s shoes.
The audience listens attentively to Mrs. Sharen Carter, one of the speakers for the " I Love the Way You Lie" domestic abuse program on Tuesday, September 21 in T.T. Allain room 213.
