Senators debated Robert’s rules of order and postponed most new business until the next senate meeting.
Confusion occurred as senators struggled to address approving legislation due to typographical errors in agendas, budgets, and order in the meeting.
The meeting opened with the official swearing in of 14 new Student Government Association senators.
Senators said, “I (their name) swear to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge.”
Senators approved the Association of Women’s Students budget, SGA concert budget, and SGA operating budget after some concerns arised on each budget.
The executive report, judiciary, and treasurer’s reports were also presented before the senate. Demetrius Sumner, SGA President presented a positive message in the executive report.
“The Lacumba referendum funds are transferred. We will be expending that money as soon as possible,” said Sumner.
Some progress was accomplished but, technicalities delayed business from being addressed and approved.
Sumner shared the success of the State of SGA address and also the success and future for the weekly walks with the chancellor.
“The paperwork and approvals have begun,” said Sumner. Signatures have been acquired for the directional signs.
A committee has been started for the volleyball and basketball courts construction.SGA is in the process of getting a permit to paint the hump.
Sumner continued, “We have had greater attendance at events since I’ve been at Southern. We need to have more security for our events.”
He agreed “1000 percent” that there needs to be a system to hold officers accountable and the need for groups to serve as their own security in addition to officers.
Confusion continued as Senator Singleton objected to motions that had already passed. Time was taken to review Robert’s code of order to make decisions from there.
The Men’s Federation budget proposed was not updated so; the budget’s approval was postponed until the next meeting.
Sumner’s Concert Budget was next on the agenda; typographical errors in line items prompted the postponing of the concert budget which included homecoming expenses.
“There is no reason to call off Homecoming 2010 because of a typo. I think common sense will prevail in this instance,” said Sumner.
Sumner went on to read the Southern University Student Government Association constitution to help the senate decide.
Senators approved the concert budget but, found similar errors in the SGA operating budget. The senate chose not to approve the operating budget.
The next senate meeting will be called to order October 13th, 2010 at 5pm in Lee Auditorium.
