Authorities responded to a blaze at White Hall dormitory around 2:30 p.m. Thursday on the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.
Firefighters were called to the scene after resident assistants on duty were successful in evacuating the building.
Director of Housing, Tracie Abraham,stated, “The building was evacuated and all of the students were accounted for.”
Resident assistant and freshman Agricultural Science major, Tyrese Chambers, said that his first thought was to get everyone out.
“The smoke, it was so much, it pushed me back,” stated Chambers, after he explains how he had to use the master key to unlock, then kick open the door.
After realizing no students were in the room, Chambers and another resident assistant then used a fire extinguisher,to attempt to subdue the blaze.
The fire was contained to a single bedroom on the second floor of the dorm.
No students have sustained any injuries.
