Professor, husband, parent, and humanitarian are many words many may use to describe Hamady Diop.
The Universitè d’Abidjan and Louisiana State University graduate has dedicated his life to enrich and aid students and citizens in the community through his research on the shrimp industry and his service on numerous committees here at Southern University.
Diop stated that he felt that God has blessed him with a talent to educate the minds of future leaders of today’s society, which was the cause of him starting his career.
When not educating students at Southern, Professor Diop is heavily active in the shrimp industry.
Diop has created assessments for local officials of the fish industries after Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina, which illustrated the economic losses in the Louisiana fishing sector.
With this information, officials were able to come to conclusion on how to rebuild a lucrative fishing industry.
“Fisheries in Transition” was a conference held in February 2007 and was organized by Diop.
The objective of this conference was to have senior fishery agencies inform fishery agencies who were affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita if they should depart or stay in their current sector and how to deal with a number of issues they might have been facing.
In 2003, Diop founded the Center for Natural Resource and Policy, which brings experts from the state to create a better comprehensive economic analysis of natural resource management.
Diop received his bachelors’ degree in Economics in 1985 from the Universitè d’Abidjan of the Ivory Coast.
He then earned his Masters in Agricultural Economics from Louisiana State University in 1994 and later earned his masters in Economics in 1997.
Two years later he earned his doctorate in Agricultural Economics from LSU.
At Southern, Diop teaches Microeconomics and Business Statistics. He also serves on the Student Recruitment, Scholarship and Outreach Committee for the Department of Economics and Finance. He is also involved with the Research Committee for the College of Business and Department of Economics and Finance University, Intellectual Committee College of Business, External Relations Taskforce Committee for the College of Business and the adviser of the Economics and Finance Students Club.
