Despite recent budget cuts, the annual end-of-year celebration—SpringFest—will once again be a four-day event.
SpringFest normally falls during the last few weeks of classes, and can be likened to a homecoming celebration, minus a football competition and alumni participation.
Last year, the university budget that funded SpringFest was cut in the tens of thousands, forcing the Wednesday to Saturday events, with Saturday culminating the festivities, to just Thursday and Saturday events.
Current SGA president Jamal Taylor said that the budget under past president Carey Ash was overextending, shorting the week’s festivities.
“I wanted (a four day SpringFest) back,” said Taylor. “It has always been an option; we have the money.”
As it stands, Wednesday and Thursday’s events are co-sponsored by KUTPRO, an on-campus modeling troupe, and the Student Government Association. Wednesday, the variety show will be held at 7 p.m. in the Cliford T. Seymour Men’s Gymnasium for $3.
“As co-hosts, KUTPRO will get the proceeds, since they haven’t had a fundraiser. They’ll be getting that money, not SGA,” said Taylor.
Thursday, the SGA Comedy Show and KUTPRO Fashion Show will be held in at 7 p.m. in the F. G. Clark Activity Center, and will be open to students with valid Southern identification.
On Friday, the Southern Pan-Hellenic Council Greek Show will also be held at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center. Ticket prices have not been determined.
SpringFest T-shirts are scheduled to be given out in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union on Friday as well, according to an event post on facebook.com.
“SpringFest T-shirts should be here by that friday (sic) this year instead of ordering 1,500 we ordered 3,000!”
At noon on Saturday, the 2009 SGA SpringFest concert will be held on yard of E. N. Mayberry’s Dining Hall.
This year’s performers will be Coppertop, Down Bad Entertainment, Gotti Boy Chris, Foxx, Partners-in-Crime, Ryan Leslie, and headliner Young Jeezy. According to Taylor, this is a SpringFest first.
“We have something for everybody,” he said. “With a larger artist list, we give SpringFest more variety. With Ryan Leslie we have R&B, we have bounce music with Gotti Boy Chris, and rap with Young Jeezy. It’s something for everybody.”
