Dear SU Students,
I am quite upset with you right now.
As a student, you have the right to place your opinion. You have the right to put yourself out there to run for any position within SGA. You have a right to vote for strong leaders that will at least leave Southern with something positive behind them. And you have the right to make Southern a better place. Did you follow any of these guidelines?
I think not.
SGA, to me, is an outlet for students to work with administrators to make Southern a better place. Are we doing that?
No.
Every year someone gets elected for the position of SGA President, Vice President, Miss Southern and the other class queens. And every year we hear the same boring old song, I will do this and that but when the person is in office, nothing is done. Well, at least maybe one or two things, but nothing significant! For the past four years, I have seen many that have tried to make the university a whole lot better and failed at it.
I have also seen many people go out and campaign to become apart of SGA and try their hardest, but didn’t get the right reaction, for whatever reason.
Are the students really voting for someone because they are fine? Or that they had a great performance in the pageant? I mean really, what makes an SGA President? Or any student body president or student leader position? Popularity? Are we voting for a prom king or queen? Do we not care about the school?
But really SU, in approximately 28 days and counting, I will be graduating from this lovely institution, leaving behind many memories; some are good, some bad. But I do have some advice for you and for all the candidates that won, (and congrats to you as well):
1. If you are elected for a position, do something. Please don’t sit around and just be like I did it, now what?
2. If you have the opportunity to run for something do it. You never know who may feel the way that you do about an issue, speak up!
3. Treat SU better. As a soon to be alumnus, I really want to come back and donate. But I am not going to donate to a school that hasn’t improved.
So, in conclusion my fellow Jaguars, since you will be fighting on one accord, let’s do something, to stand out over all of the HBCU’s, instead of just getting into the office of SGA and sitting there looking pretty. Many people can say a lot of pretty words, a young gentleman once said, but not show any pretty actions.
