The Southern University Student Government Association hosted the 2009 “Fashion Through the Times” program Friday night to aid needy families in the Baton Rouge area.
Held in the Cotillion Ballroom in the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union, attendees gained free entrance to the event with the donation of a canned good towards the Baton Rouge Food Bank. The program also doubled as a fashion show and an African-American history program to coincide with the ending of Black History Month.
After a 20-minute delay, the program opened with the singing of the “Black National Anthem.” Afterward, the KutPro models graced the stage to display the styles of the 20’s to the 70’s. The Aceat Model Troupe also did their part by modeling the fashions of the 80’s.
After a brief intermission during which a tribute dedicated to black history month was performed, the SU Jimbawe Dancers treated the audience to a performance. The KutPro models returned to the stage to showcase the trendy dress of the 90’s decade. This was followed by a routine by the SU Gold-N-Bluez Dance Team. For the finale, the Aceat Modeling Troupe exhibited what they thought could be possible future attire in the world of fashion.
As a thank you, students holding raffle tickets, that were handed out at the beginning and throughout the evening, with the winning numbers received a Southern University T-shirt.
At the end of the program Jonas Vanderbilt, assistant program adviser for the Smith-Brown Union, presented a bouquet of roses to Chairman of the Black History Association Juanita Davis for her contributions to the success of the evening.
