Despite the fact the new film “Stomp The Yard” appeared at the top of the Hollywood’s movie lists, and the plot centers heavily around a Greek-based theme, some members of fraternities and sororities at Southern University felt like the movie is a gross misrepresentation.
Some Greeks said they felt less inclined to go to theatres by the movie’s previews and ad campaign.
“I’m not excited about seeing it at all because of the marketing of the movie,” said Tiffany Minor, a senior child development major from Baton Rouge and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
“I feel that the movie will not portray Greek nor HBCU life in the right way,” Minor said. “I’ll catch the DVD.”
Mark Pollard, a senior elementary education major from New Orleans, shared in Minor’s sentiments.
“Personally, I don’t agree with the movie because I feel that it’s not a real depiction of what our fathers founded,” Pollard, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Inc, said. “They make it look too easy. It won’t get my money.”
Some SU Greeks who did see the movie share a similar opinion, despite the movie decent plot.
“The movie depicted Greek life in a positive manner,” said Niiobli Armah, Student Government President and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “I just didn’t like the break dancing – it was superficial. But overall it was decent.”
However, not all critiques were unfavorable. Some members of the National Pan-Hellenic said “Stomp” shed a good light on black college Greek life.
Brittany Bass, a junior political science major from Shreveport, and the president of the Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., said the overall message of the movie was impressive.
“I liked it,” she said. “Some of the situations aren’t what usually happen, but I think the writer used the scenes to portray a message.”
“When you go through a struggle, you find yourself and better yourself, which is the same message we as Greeks try to portray to people who want to join all the time,” Bass said.
