Faced with defending the National Collegiate Athletic Associations leading scorer in Jackson State’s Trey Johnson, Southern University’s Deforrest Riley-Smith displayed his skills on both ends of the court in Monday’s 73-62 Jaguar victory at the Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
In the victory, Riley-Smith scored a career high 37 points, on 13 of 19 shots and 5 of 7 from 3-point line.
“He kept things simple,” said Rob Spivery, head coach for the men’s basketball team. “Scoring 37 points in addition to the defensive job he did on Trey Johnson was an outstanding performance.”
Johnson, who entered the game averaging 30.3 points per game, finished with 19 points, tying his lowest output of the season. On the night, Johnson finished 9-for-25 overall and 0-for-7 from the 3-point line.
The reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jaguars (3-13, 2-2 SWAC) never trailed en route to defeating a Jackson State team (9-8, 3-1), which had won its first three SWAC games by combined 45 points.
“This is a good sign,” Spivery said. “If we continue to play with poise, we can become a pretty good basketball team.”
The Jaguars will return home to the FG Activity Center on Jan.13, 2007, when they host the Lions of Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
