Southern University’s Chris Davis scored a career-high 25 points and Geri Guillory hit five of six free throws down the stretch, as the Jaguars (4-14, 3-3 SWAC) held on for a 72-64 win over Mississippi Valley State (8-11, 3-2 SWAC) at the FG Clark Activity Center on the Southern campus.
Southern trailed Mississippi Valley State by as many as seven points in the second half, before the Jags mounted their comeback.
Davis also collected career-high six rebounds. Guillory scored a career-high 15 points and freshman Douglas Scott added seven rebounds.
Free throw shooting had been an Achilles heel for Southern all season, but SU shot 78 percent on the night connecting on 22 of 28 free throws, and most importantly, hitting seven of eight in closing the game out. Southern also outrebounded the bigger Delta Devils 37-26.
Jeffrey Price led the Delta Devils with 12 points, while Stanford Speech scored 11 and Tychicus Snow added 10.
Southern will hit the road for the Alabama swing this weekend, taking on the Hornets of Alabama State, Saturday at 3 p.m. and Alabama A&M on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
