The Southern University women’s basketball team dropped their second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference match to Grambling State University Lady Tigers 65-54.
“I thought we played hard enough the first 30 minutes to win the game, but we just didn’t play with any intensity down the stretch,” said head coach Sandy Pugh. “I challenged them to step up, and they didn’t answer the call.”
Southern (1-10, 1-2 SWAC) was lead by senior Tiffany Jones, who topped her career high of 16 versus Prairie View, by scoring 17 points against GSU. The Baltimore, Maryland native also finished with six rebounds and five steals. Red-shirt senior, Ashley Blake, completed the game with a season high 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. The former Capitol star saw a familiar sight on the other team as her sister and former Jaguar Adrian Blake was now enrolled at Grambling and playing her final season in a Lady Tiger uniform.
“Whenever we guard each other it feels like one-on-one at our house,” said Blake. “I always want to beat her and she wants to beat me.”
SU will now travel to Jackson, Miss. for a contest versus the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University on Monday afternoon. The game will be televised on ESPNU and will start at 3:30 p.m.
