Many students of Southern University have questioned for many years, why our marching band does not participate in our own Homecoming Parade.
As a native of this community, I have attended the parade since the age of five and never has the band appeared. In fact, the last appearance of the Human Jukebox dates back to 1969. This truly concerns me in that–of the approximate 120 HBCU’s across the nation, the Jukebox is of seven HBCU’s that have marching units that DO NOT participate.
On a more personal note, many of my childhood friends were never fortunate as I to see the band the night of the football game. This year and in years that have rolled past they have never seen the “Best Band in the Land,” which is right in their own backyard.
It puzzles me that in one breath, we say the Jukebox is better than any SWAC or MEAC band across the nation, yet in the same breath the director cannot seemingly pull off a brief appearance at the Homecoming Parade.
The blame is definitely not on the band members themselves. They have various personal opinions and are impartial towards this matter. However, this issue is bigger than one man, therefore with the support of the SU Board of Supervisors and the Chancellor of this campus, I will do whatever it takes to continue to vocalize the voice of the students.
My only mission is to properly inform the students and community of issues that are of importance to them. I will not inappropriately handle the situation, but I work for the students, and if I must be the only one to stand up to the monarch, then that is what I shall do.
