Everybody has probably had his or her share of ups and downs this fall during registration.
Whether it was being kicked out of the system, problems with financial aid, or overbooked housing, those are just of the few obstacles you will experience as a college student, especially at Southern University.
I know I had my share of problems during registration and it wasn’t until after the first few home football games and hype parties that I regained my jaguar pride. A lot of people are still walking around complaining about the registration process, administrators, and not receiving refund checks. Relax! Learn from this experience and next year don’t wait until the week of registration to handle your business. The registrar’s office and the financial aid office are open all summer.
When it comes down to dealing with faculty and administrators, remember to keep a positive attitude and a professional demeanor. People are more likely to respond to you in a respectful manner if you show respect to them. As for the financial aid situation, be patient! Your loan check (the one you really didn’t need because you received a Pell Grant & TOPS and you are going to have to pay it back plus interest after you graduate) will be in just in time for you to put a new set of rims on your car and buy the latest fall fashions for the Bayou Classic.
For everyone else who are just “mad” at the entire system, you can LEAVE! I’m sure you passed at least three major colleges or universities as you traveled to Southern. If you don’t want to leave Baton Rouge I’m sure that LSU or BRCC will gladly accept you with opened arms.
Before enrolling in SU I know we have all heard the horror stories of waiting in long lines all day just to be told you are missing something and running from department to department trying to get an override. We can’t let those things interfere with the real reason why we are here. The educational, social, and spiritual experiences we receive at SU are endless.
Our university is renowned for many of its programs such as engineering, music, and law. We have an award winning band, a great football team, and a culturally diverse student body. How many schools do you know do things the way we do them here? We can turn any event into a party and y’all know how we “break” at 12 o’clock in the union.
Southern just wouldn’t be Southern if we didn’t have a D.J. blasting the latest tunes, bruh man selling incense, “Gucci” watches, and bootleg CDs, and frats passing out flyers to their parties.
Didn’t you just feel the love when the entire student section at the SU vs. UAPB game belted out the lyrics to “Contagious” accompanied by the band? Nowhere but at Southern is all I can say. These are just a few of the things that make SU unique.
Despite all of the ins and outs we have to go through at Southern University, we must admit we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
