Basketball is often a game of matches and mismatches. To one Lady Jaguar, it ‘s just a game. That is until she puts on that blue and gold jersey advertising #32.
Junior Cherise Sims, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport, Louisiana balances academics and athletics while maintaining a grade point average of 3.2, and majoring in accounting.
“My GPA is low this semester, which is not good. It dropped. I got lazy in class, but all that has changed,” said Sims.
A 5-9 Sims, plays the position of guard, she credits her conditioning skills to her sister who plays for Southern University-Shreveport.
“My sister helps me with my posting, rebounding and conditioning, and of course I help her,” expressed Sims.
Unlike many, Sims expressed no interest in furthering a profession in basketball after her collegiate career.
“A future in the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) or oversees is out. I thought about it, but basketball will not be forever. My goal is to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA),” vowed Sims.
Praising Coach Sandy Pugh, for guiding her on and off the court,” Whenever we need something she encourages us. She gets the team involved in the community. She motivates us to excel,” applauded Sims.
A member of the Dean’s List, Sims also creates attention on the court. Coach Pugh and the women’s basketball staff nominated Sims as the Most Improved Player.
“I’m looking for Cherise to be a leader this season. She’s in better shape and she is ahead in her training,” said assistant coach Lisa Powell.
