Alcorn volleyball team sweep Jags, SU to host tournament
LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State Lady Braves defeated the Southern Lady Jaguars in a hard fought, three-game match in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Alcorn State, Miss.
Alcorn State won all three games with scores of 30-25, 30-22 and 30-22 thus improving its record to 16-2 overall while Southern drops to 7-9.
Alcorn State was led by outside hitters LaToya Washington and Andrea Horska’. Washington had a game high of 14 kills along with two digs while Horska’ added 13 kills and four digs. Southern was led by hitter Maya Valerie who had twelve kills along with five digs and one assisted block. Middle blocker Mayumi Takeuchi had nine kills and seven digs while setter Latrecia Samuel had 38 assists and six digs.
The Lady Jags will next host its 18th Annual Invitational from Oct. 12-13 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 pm. The tournament features Southern, Alcorn, Grambling, Texas Southern, Prairie View, Mississippi Valley and Morris Brown.
SU is scheduled to take on Morris Brown on Fri. Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m. and then will take on MVSU at 5 p.m.. Next SU will take on PVU on Sat., Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. The Championship rounds start at 2p.m., with the Championship game at 5 p.m.
All matches are at Seymour Gym.
