LORMAN, Miss. (AP) – Alcorn State football player JeKelcy Lee Johnson was killed when he was shot in the head during a campus confrontation.
A second student was wounded in the Monday night shootings and four people were being held for questioning, Sheriff Frank Davis said Tuesday.
Johnson, a 20-year-old freshman linebacker, died at Claiborne County Hospital, coroner J.W. Mallett said.
The confrontation happened at 11:30 p.m. outside Men’s Tower.
“We had four guys come on campus from Natchez,” Davis said. “They made some statements to a young lady that she didn’t like, and two students came to her rescue and were shot. JeKelcy Johnson was killed.”
The other student, Roddel Devoual, 20, was shot in the side, the sheriff said. He was in stable condition Tuesday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, hospital officials said.
The four people being held were “joyriding” on the campus and were not students, Alcorn State spokesman Ralph Payne said.
“One of them, I understand, threw a bottle and it injured a female student,” Payne said. “That’s when JeKelcy got involved and, tragically, was shot.”
Davis said his office is still investigating.
“We’ll be talking to the district attorney about charges,” he said.
The student hit by the bottle apparently was taken to Claiborne County Hospital, but there was no record of her requiring hospitalization.
