Southern University’s Women Flag Football team, called the Dream Team won the Louisiana women’s flag football title giving Southern University its seventh consecutive Louisiana State Championship, in Thibodeaux, La.

Head Coach Lawrence Lewis and Assistant Coach Mark Creecy had no trouble in the first game against the Nicholls State Phi Mu Sorority team. SU went up first on a 25-yard TD run by Renee Bell. Quarterback Alisia Cardoza then pitched to Amy White for six more. Shalonda Thibeaux ran the point after for a 14-0 lead at the half. Dream Team opened the second half with a 60-yard three-play drive and continued to a 35-0 victory.

Loloya University 0
On SU’s first possession, Washington dotted in for two quick TDs and a 14-0 lead. Offrey returned an interception on the next score and a 21-0 lead and a 70-0 win.

Xavier University 13
One game away from the finals, SU promptly drove 60-yards on three pitch-backs and a TD by Tiesha Wilson. Southern gave up its first interception. XU tied the score at 7 all. But Southern came right back on a 3 play 65-yard drive. Bell ran the PAT to lead 14-7 at the half. Then Bell stepped in front of a Xavier pass and streaked 48 yards to put SU up 20-7.

Louisiana College 0
Trying for a repeat and extend Southern’s dominance of State Crowns, Southern’s Dream Team had Louisiana College standing in its way. No problem. A Cardoza to Washington pass pushed SU out to a 6-0 lead went on to a 26-0 win. Southern won the State Intramural Sports Championship for the seventh year in a row.
MEN
SU Soldiers 41
Holy Cross (N.O.) 0
In the men’s division, the Southern Soldiers represented SU in the State Intramural Finals. Game one pitted the Soldiers against Holy Cross of New Orleans. Southern went up 13-0 on a Davis to Charles Rivers reception. Collins had Holy Cross’ number; as he had his third interception of the game. A Davis to Forman 30-yard pass netted another six that put SU up 20-0 and to an eventual 41-0 final.

LSU 14
The Soldiers were next matched against their cross-town rivals Louisiana State University. The LSU team marched 60-yards to take an early 7-0 lead. Davis hit Forman for a 30-yard gain and then Jackson scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. Going into the half the Southern Solders trailed LSU 14-3. SU gained the lead on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Jackson. A touchdown by Davis ended the night Soldiers victory 33-14.
Delgado Community College forfeited their game against the Soldiers moving them into the playoff round.

UL – Lafayette 13
With the end of the half near, Jimmie Winters intercepted ULL at their 20-yard line, from there Davis scored again for a 27-7 Soldier lead. ULL opened the second half up with a 7-yard touchdown. Williams of the Southern Soldiers broke through the ULL line for a 60-yard touchdown to seal the victory at 33-13.

US Navy 14
In the semi-final game, the SU Soldiers were up against the US Navy team. Southern’s men intramural team had not won the state title since 1992. They were runner’s up in 1996. One win would place them in the finals. Navy moved out to a 7-0 lead in the first half. Davis threw a strike to Forman for the touchdown and the score was tied at seven. Forman came through again on a 34-yard touchdown reception to move ahead 13-7. With 25 seconds left in the game, Navy threw a bomb to the Soldiers one-yard line. Two plays later, Navy scored for a 14-13 lead.

Kara Franklin of Southern University was crowned Miss State Farm Bayou Classic 2001-02, Friday, November 23 in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans.
An evening themed “A Tropical Holiday”, was the setting for a showcase of ten lovely young ladies from Southern and Grambling State University.
The contestants were Ghijuanna Bates, RaShon Carruthers, Rachel McNeil, Shakia Payne and Ebony Gray, all of Grambling State University and Jonine Moch, Shadelia Thomas, Kara Franklin, Candace Clement, and Tiffany Sanders of Southern University.
The night opened with a “tropical” dance party in the islands, which served as an introductory period for the ladies.
“At the beginning of the pageant it was hard to tell who would emerge the victor, but I knew in my heart it would be one of the girls from Southern,” said Student Government President Avery Wilson.
The ladies went through four more traditional pageant segments; the swimsuit, talent, evening gown and interview segments, before Kara Franklin, a 19-year old native of Baton Rouge was crowned by Miss Bayou Classic 2000-2001 Rashuane Payton, also of Southern University.
“I can’t believe it…I am so excited and thankful,” said Franklin after being crowned. “I hope that I make a good queen. I am just so happy to be representing two of the most prestigious black universities in the nation.”
In addition to bringing home the title of queen, Candace Clement and Shadelia Thomas of SU, placed first and second runners-up respectively.

Friday November 23, 2001, the New Orleans Superdome was the place to be for the 28th annual Bayou Classic-Greek Show, which showcased Greek organizations from Louisiana.
The Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc brought home the first place prize of $3,000.00. The Alpha Sigma Chapter Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity who brought home second place of $2,000.00
“It was a good show. I feel that it was unfair that Grambling was allowed to send two fraternities and sororities, giving them more chances to win. Overall I felt like the Alphas who won presented a good show but we were better,” said Channing Donald member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
Greeks from Dillard, Grambling, Xavier also competed against Greeks from S.U.
“We went on stage with confidence and the drive to win, and that’s what we did and we had fun doing it,” said Issa Gray a member of Delta Sigma Theta.
