The installation of the new campus call boxes has given students a different sense of security when walking the campus in the day or night.
Now that students have actually gotten a sense of security there are still problems.
The call box at the end of the ravine was recently vandalized and no one knows whom to blame.
“Students would push the button as a game and they ended up causing the box’s mechanisms to malfunction,” said Kevin Johnson, deputy administrator of the police department.
While it has been reported that the crime rate at Southern University has decreased in abundance over the past three years the question still remains: Are we completely safe?
“Some people may not be able to reach a call box if they get into trouble therefore we need more SUPD patrolling certain areas of the campus at night,” said Maurice Johnson, a senior Therapeutic Recreation major.
“I think the call boxes are a start to making our campus a more safe environment,” said Crystal Myres, a junior Mechanical Engineering major from Mansfield.
According to Johnson, the call box by the ravine has been replaced and the other five located on campus are working properly.
