The Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has been placed on immediate suspension by Southern University.
The fraternity went under investigation when, according to Bob Bennett, Director of Student Life, his office received a phone call from a student who claimed that he was hazed and also for initiating a line in the fall.
According to Bennett, the chapter was not to have a line until the spring semester.
“I was informed by the student that he was pledging in a fraternity so I immediately decided to investigate the situation because hazing is illegal and I am a member of the fraternity,” said Bennett.
In a note delivered to Bennett by a student who was allegedly on line it was found out that on October 15 the student was instructed to park at the stadium, get out his car and bring $100 and a case of beer with him. He was then covered up, placed in a cargo area and asked questions as he was driven around.
On October 17 he was told to go to an apartment where members of the fraternity were meeting.
His directions were to park and be picked up by another member who advised him to enter the apartment and run really fast. As he entered the apartment he was slapped, kicked and punched by members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
According to the victim he was told that if anyone were to find out what happened they would find him and “beat my ass.”
“All of the allegations are false and will be proven false, we have never and never will participate in any illegal intake activity that will go against the by-laws written by the university. The Beta Sigma Chapter will be back before you know it,” said Brandon Brumfield, president of the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.
“It has yet to be proven that anyone on this alleged line was a part of this line,” said Brumfield.
The fraternity was charged with violating code 1.11 in the Student Code of Conduct Manual which covers hazing. The fraternity was placed on suspension for one year with the suspension ending the Spring semester of 2003. They also have to complete 150 hours of community service at the Physical Plant under the direction of Eli Guillory, Facilities Planner for the Office of Facilities Planning.
Members of Alpha Phi Alpha are not allowed to wear Greek paraphernalia or participate in any campus functions.
“There has been a major effort from the National Pan Hellenic Council to get rid of hazing totally and as a result these organizations must go by the rules or they will face the punishment,” said Willis Jacobs, advisor Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.
This is the second time since 1996 that the chapter was suspended from the university.
“This is a disappointment, to some degree I feel anger because these are very bright students and they know the difference between right and wrong,” said Jacobs.
