In the book Pimp by Robert Beck, Iceberg Slim says something to this effect: A pimp is happy when his whores are giggling. That means they are still asleep. I struggled to comprehend the meaning of that statement for a while after reading the book. When I finally grasped what the author was saying, I realized that I understood all along what he meant. It was just a frightening fact to accept that a person possessed such a “devilish” mentality. What shook me even more was the understanding of who in society is “giggling and still asleep,” and the knowledge of who is “happy.”
I was in a grocery store parking lot several years ago when I saw something that, to this very day (especially on this campus), torments the very core of my last nerve. A young man was sitting in a parked car with the windows down and, of course, his music was blaring. Patrons and onlookers walked by with looks of disgust, and children pressed their palms against their ears as the vile lyrics and the thunderous baseline permeated the air and pulsated throughout the parking lot. As the people passed, the young man merely bobbed his head to the beat, as if he was being moved by the word of God. Giggling. One particular passerby, an elderly woman, stands out in my memory of the incident. As she passed by the booming vehicle, she just shook her head with a look of hopelessness, as if a battle had been lost. I thought to myself, “One has been.”
Not only is blasting music inconsiderate to everyone within the vicinity, it is a sign of ignorance and immaturity. What kind of respect can be demanded from an individual who disrespects others by forcefully imposing loud, lascivious music upon listening ears? And people that choose to ride around disturbing the serenity of others says volumes about themselves without even speaking. What they are telling everyone is, “Hey, I need attention. I’m not a fully developed adult.”
For a moment, I would like for you to think about who is made “happy” by this conduct. I’m not referring to friends, peers, or the “man”(even though he does smile at our ignorance), but another “force” whose sole purpose in life is to see us lose our soul. For the spiritually challenged, I’m speaking of the “father of all lies.” And if he can keep your heads “knoddin’” and minds deceived until time runs out his mission is fulfilled.
In spite of this fact, many of you will keep blasting your ignorant music and bobbing your ignorant heads, unaware that you are still “asleep” and the clock is steady ticking. If you refuse to listen, dance on puppet. I don’t need your “Amen.” I brought my own.
