Every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon the Southern University bowling team volunteers by helping out with the Metro Bowl Junior bowling league. They work with children from the ages of three to nine years old.
“It is fun volunteering with the Jr. Bowlers working with the kids makes it fun for us,” said Bernadette Wooly.
They teach the children different bowling techniques to help them with their bowling.
“I learn to bowl straight, strikes and spares,” said seven-year-old Caleb Carter of Central Academy.
The SU bowling team also prepare the Jr. Bowlers for their up coming tournaments. The league’s first tournament will be the Baton Rouge City Tournament to be held in two phases on November 1-2 and the 8-9.
Youth Activities Director Wendy Sibley coordinates the Metro Bowl Junior league.
“I love working with the kids they are our future bowlers,” said Wendy Sibley.
Over the past year approximately one million dollars has been spent remodeling the center, in order to make bowling more fun and draw in new bowlers. It has also given the children a fun and more colorful atmosphere.
SU bowling team work very closely with the children during the year. This has helped them to build close working relationships with the children. Thus turning their volunteerism into a much more fun event for themselves and the Jr. Bowlers.
