The Southern volleyball team finished the Mississippi Valley State University invitational volleyball tournament, 3-1, to improving its record to 3-5.
In game one SU earned its first victory of the season sweeping Paul Quinn College three games to none. Senior Ena Payne finished the contest with 10 kills.
SU’s second game provided an opportunity to avenge an earlier loss to Alabama State. After five matches SU came out victorious. The win was SU’s first defeat of ASU since October 17, 2003. Payne recorded 21 kills for her highest total this season and second highest in her career.
On the final day of the Devilettes tournament SU avenged their second lost of the season by handing Alabama State their sixth lost of the season. Junior Banaka Okwuone ended the game with 11 kills while Payne finished her third straight game in double digit kills with 11.
In the final match for the Lady Jaguars was conference rival Grambling State. GSU proved to much as the Lady Tigers handed Southern their fifth lost of the season. Once again Payne led the way for the women from “the bluff” with seven kills. Junior captain Candace Southall finished with 12 digs.
Payne was named to All-tournament team while SU finished second in the invitational.
SU will open its home schedule Tuesday, September 23. SU will host South Carolina State University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and the event is free to the public.
