Southern University’s Student Government Association held a pep rally yesterday for the upcoming football game against Mississippi Valley State University. With the theme “Hi Hater,” the pep rally was, according to SGA Activities Coordinator Elyse McFadden, a way to get students hyped for Southern’s first home game of the season.
“We are here to promote school spirit,” said the senior marketing major from Manteca, Calif.
Local Baton Rouge DJ, PK1, kept the records spinning for all who attended while Southern’s cheerleading team and Gold N’ Bluez performed.
While the football team and Human Jukebox Marching Band were slated to make an appearance, they didn’t attend.
Southern’s Greek organizations, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc., Zeta Ph Beta Sorority Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Louisiana State University’s Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. participated in the events Greek stroll off.
Senior marketing major from New Orleans, Keith Doleman, pleaded with students who were in attendance to vote on a referendum that would give $300,000 that has been stuck in an account for 50 years to SGA.
“The money can go to SGA account and could be used toward the students,” said Doleman.
Candidates running for SGA freshmen president including political science major from Napoleonville, Janea Jamison; business management major from Jackson Miss Marlin Hollins and political science major from New Orleans Takeisha Cowart plead their case for those in attendance.
Freshmen nursing major from Houston Darchell Fisher said that the pep rally was exciting and that the pep rally was bigger than the one she had during highschool.
”I see that this school has a lot of school pride,” said Fisher. “There is going to be a big turnout Saturday.”
