HOUSTON—Southern got its first Southwestern Athletic Conference win over Texas Southern in dominating fashion, taking the match 3-1 last Friday in Houston.
SU rode the arm of senior Ena Payne as the Breaux Bridge, La., native ended the game for the seventh time with double-digit kills. Payne totaled 17 kills, 6 digs and two blocks.
The Jaguar defense played a huge role as four players finished with double-digit digs. Sophomore Lourena Beathley recorded 28 for her season high. Junior Candace Southall completed the game with 11 digs and seven kills, sophomore Diane Chavis just missed her first double double of the year with nine kills and 10 digs, while senior captain Lakenya Simpson finished with her first double-double of the year with 37 assists and 10 digs.
“The young ladies did a great job out there tonight,” Southern coach Nathaniel Denu said. “They played tough all four games and did not want to lose.”
SU hosts Alcorn State today at 7:30 p.m. in Seymour Gymnasium. The event is free and open to the public.
