The Society for Finan-cial Education and Pro-fessional Development (SFEPD) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., that conducts seminars on business and finance at Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country.
“I feel that SFEPD is doing a wonderful thing by providing scholarships to students in the college of business and I hope to one day be a recipient,” said LaKeydra Tolliber, a junior business major from Beaumont, Texas.
Theodore R. Daniels, who serves as both founder and president of the organization, along with SFEPD, gives out scholarships to undergraduate junior and senior students that attend a HBCU who are majoring in business, accounting, finance, economic, and/or marketing.
“As a business major, I feel that any contribution to our college is well appreciated,” said Tolliber.
“I want to make sure that students get financial help so they can purchase books, laptops, and other tools that can help them become better, more successful students,” said Daniels.
Daniels usually visits Southern twice a year. In August, he hosted a credit management seminar for incoming freshmen, and plans to return in the spring to conduct a business management seminar.
“This upcoming seminar will cover all the key elements of personal finance,” said Daniels.
All Southern students are invited to attend these seminars no matter what their major is. Two students that attend Southern were awarded with scholarships form this organization this year.
“Some of these include credit, investments, setting financial goals, budgeting, insurance, retirement planning, and other topics that cover personal finance,” said Daniels.
The seminars aim is to educate and teach students to organize their personal finances while in college, along with saving and spending money.
“I believe that anyone and everyone should attend to at least one of these seminars,” said Desmond Edwards, a junior Mechanical Engineering major from Houston.
“The fact that the meetings are free is what makes the events even more beneficial.”
