MONDAY, 4.14.08 – 9:40 p.m.
Results for the Student Government Association and Miss Southern elections were announced this afternoon outside the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union.
Junior marketing major from Manteca, Calif. and current activities coordinator for SGA, Elyse McFadden is straggling behind junior history major from Lafayette Jamal Taylor who has 547 to Taylor’s 685 votes but is still in high hopes.
“I’m happy with the results,” said McFadden. “Now it’s game time.”
Taylor said he was satisfied with the results and is hopeful his lead continues into the run-off that will take place in the Cotillion Ballroom this upcoming Wednesday.
“I feel that the students made a right choice,” said Taylor. “They (students) want a candidate for students.”
Both beat out senior political science major from New Orleans, Kyle Green who only had 487 votes.
Junior political nursing major Mhykeisha Evans and junior mass communications major Jennifer M. Taylor, both from Shreveport, will battle for the crown of Miss Southern in the upcoming run-off.
Taylor and Evans beat out Derra Howard (182 votes), Courtney Jacobs (147 votes) and Fetia Rogers (75 votes).
Taylor, who is leading in votes with 742 votes, is proud of her current accomplishment.
“It feels really good, it’s been a lot of tears and prayers,” said Taylor. “I’m just going to keep pushing.”
Evans, who is trailing behind with 575 is keeping positive.”This happened in my dream that I would be in the run-off,” said Evans. “Jesus made my claim and I will be Miss Southern.”
Stasha Rhodes, junior political science major and Napoleonville native beat junior marketing major Keith Doleman, a New Orleans resident with a vote of 1,046 to 671.
Rhodes, who is currently already SGA vice president due to the controversy involving the removal of Channing Blake from office, is thankful to the students that supported her.
“I don’t know what to say,” said Rhodes. “I am thankful and humbled by this opportunity.”
The role of chief justice will go to SGA newcomer Christopher Richardson, who won out over current senior class president Davitria Stubbs with a 1,010 to 697 vote.
While Richardson was unavailable for comment, current chief justice and senior business management major from Baton Rouge Johnathan Hill who has served for two years, has some advice for the new face of SGA that will take his place in the upcoming fall.
“Don’t let the title hinder you service to the students,” said Hill.
