A Southern University Law School students and Louisiana State University at Shreveport Graduate was elected Student Bar Association President on Monday, April 14 in the Southern University Law Center Atrium.
Dwazendra Smith a second year law school student from Shreveport was elected president and sworn in by Judge John Michael Guidry of the First Circuit Court of Appeal.
Smith said “when I first found out I was sitting in the atrium waiting on the election commission to make the announcements. It was a good feeling to be elected because your peers are the people who elect you to the position, and it felt good to know that they trust me to do the job.”
“I decided to run for president of the association because I love this school, and I feel I have a duty and loyalty to this school, I want to get involve and make a change at Southern,” said Smith.
Smith is a member of several other programs including: the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, where she worked as the 2007-2008 bailiff, the Criminal Law Society, Moot Court Board, and the Black Law Student’s Association.
“One of my acts as president is to help improve parking for the SULC, parking is a major concern that needs a resolution, I already have 243 signatures for improving the parking lot for the SULC, it will be presented to President Slaughter, and the Chancellor” said Smith.
Smith also stated as president she plans to uphold the SGA Constitution which includes: making sure the voices of the students get heard, and keeping a good line of communication between herself and the administration.
Smith Graduated from Louisiana State University in Shreveport with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, and after law school, she plans to be a litigation attorney.
“I would tell students who are interested in this position in the future to not just try it out for résumé purposes but to try to make a change, not only for us but for those who come behind us” said Smith.
Dwazendra Smith has also been named the senior associate editor for the newly established Law Center publication, “The Journal of Race, Gender and Poverty.”
Smith said “I have to thank the students of SULC for allowing me to represent you.”
