In the crowded halls of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, it was announced that Jamal Taylor will be Student Government Association President and Mhykeisha Evans will be Miss Southern University for the 2008-09 school term.
Taylor beat junior marketing major from Manteca, Calif. Elyse R. McFadden with 877 votes to her 764 and credits the students’ want for change for his victory.
“It feels like the students have fought for change,” said Taylor. “Students want Southern to be the Mecca of HBCUs.”
Current SGA president Carey Ash, who argued with Taylor after the new victor made controversial statements regarding his administration during the run-off debate, is worried about Southern’s future.
“May God have mercy on Southern University’s soul,” said Ash.
Mhykeisha Evans defeated Jennifer Taylor who was leading before the run off elections. With a win of 829 to Taylor’s 818, Evans feels her faith and determination won her the title.
“I claimed it; God claimed it,” said Evans. “I saw it in my dream.”
Current Miss Southern Jasmine Smutherman who is a friend of Evans is glad to see her wear the crown.
“It feels awesome; she is my friend and line sister,” said Smutherman. “She can get the job done.” Smutherman’s advice for the new Miss Southern was to work hard, manage time and keep God first.
Stasha Rhodes, junior political science major and Napoleonville native, beat junior marketing major Keith Doleman, a New Orleans resident with a vote of 1,046 to 671 in Monday’s election.
Rhodes, who is currently SGA vice president due to the controversy involving the removal of Channing Blake from office, is thankful to the students that supported her.
“I don’t know what to say,” said Rhodes. “I am thankful and humbled by this opportunity.”
Newcomer Christopher Richardson, who won out over current senior class president Davitria Stubbs with a 1,010 to 697 vote is the new chief justice.
“The students spoke, and my job now is to work for the students and uphold the Constitution to the best of my abilities.”
