Carey Ash, Student Government Association president, announced Wednesday at noon that recording artist Foxx, DJ Unk (Koch) and Letoya Luckett (Capitol) will be performing during the Springfest concert April 26 on the Mayberry lawn from noon to 4 p.m.
Baton Rouge native Foxx (real name Jonathan Reed), known for his hits “Wipe Me Down” featuring Boosie and Webbie and “Not Myself” both from his debut album under Trill Entertainment entitled “Street Gossip,” which was released fall of last year, will be performing.
DJ Unk (real name Anthony Platt), whose album “Beat’n Down Yo Block” spawned hits “Walk it Out” and “Two Step” in late 2006, will also be performing.
Last, former member of girl group Destiny’s Child and platinum selling R&B songstress Letoya Luckett, best known for her for her 2006 hit “Torn” from her self titled debut album, will be performing.
According to Google Trends, a site dedicated to what’s popular or not in any subject in scale form, all of the artist named were at the peak of their popularity in 2006 and faded afterward.
An estimated $40K budget due to budget cuts is the reason for the currently less than stellar artist according to Ash.
“We did the best we could with what we had,” said Ash. ” I think it’s an indication of things to come and I don’t mean it in a good light.”
On the other hand, students like senior business management major from Vivian Deonis Dillard, is excited about the line-up.
“As far as the artist, I’m overwhelmed cause I know it’s going to be crunk,” said Dillard
Comedian Roland Powell, who is best seen on BET’s Comic View, will be performing also during Springfest.
This takes the place of what in the past was a comedy show held in F.G. Clark Activity Center before Springfest.
According to current SGA presidential candidate and current activities coordinator for SGA Elyse McFadden, cost of mandatory Southern University Police Department security caused the change in venue.
Other activities planned will include a mechanical bull, airbrush tattoos, an inflatable twister and more giving this year’s Springfest, more of a family gathering feel which McFadden said is why students should go.
“We are trying to make it more of a picnic,” said McFadden. “The students paid for it, so they might as well come just to have fun.”
