Both electricity and classes were suspended between 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in order to repair a leaning light pole next to the poultry farm located in the rear of Southern University’s campus.
Richard Troullier, superintendent of Central Plant and Electrical Services, said that after the turbulent weather on Tuesday caused the light pole to waver in the wind, he followed protocol and contacted Flandus McClinton, Jr., vice chancellor for finance and administration; because he said if more harsh weather followed, Southern could be without electricity for days.
According to McClinton, memos were sent out university wide via email in order to inform the academic departments and all Southern personnel.
When Syble Joseph, supervisor in Dunn Hall’s food services department heard of the scheduled blackout, she said, “Me and Loyce Collins, the manager, took it upon ourselves to prepare a hot meal for the students.”
Joseph said between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., students would be able to pick up to go plates and choose between spaghetti and hunter’s style chicken; this information was disseminated via flyers.
Sophomore psychology major Jordan Miller said he didn’t know anything about the outage or the preparations made by the cafeteria.
“I came to the surprise when I woke up from my nap that there weren’t any lights on. I actually panicked. I thought they were messing with circuit breakers in the hallway. So my friends and I collectively made a decision, we would just go to IHOP (International House of Pancakes).”
Troullier said that the cost of repair will be approximately $8,000 but Southern should only have to come out of pocket for $1,000, the insurance deductible.
Buildings not affected were T. T. Allain and J. B. Moore Hall which houses the university’s mainframe, Southern University Laboratory School, Financial Aid due to a special project and Southern University Police Department for security reasons said Troullier.
