MONROE, La. (AP) _ Police arrested a 21-year-old man dressed in black who entered the University of Louisiana at Monroe library’s computer lab wearing a gun on his hip.
“A non-student was accompanied by a student and the employee noticed a gun strapped on the non-student’s hip,” Laura Harris, ULM media relation’s director, said of the Tuesday afternoon incident.
Harris said university police arrived within a few minutes and the suspect was quickly removed. An affidavit on file with the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center, filed by university police, described the gun as a semiautomatic handgun. However, university vice president for student affairs Wayne Brumfield described the weapon Wednesday as a BB gun.
“Basically, it all happened very quickly and our campus is safe, which is a top priority,” said Harris.
Jonathan L. Pope, of Holly Ridge, was booked with carrying a firearm on school property.
