The Words is an interesting movie about honesty, love and deception as a young writer who goes through a difficult time earning his literary merit honestly. This movie begins with a renowned author named Clay Hammond, played by Dennis Quaid, reading excerpts of his new novel titled ‘The Words’, which follows a young writer in his quest to find himself in the world of literature. Rory Jansen, played by Bradley Cooper, struggles through his creative journey to write a perfect piece of literature.
He faces personal demons, such as guilt and confusion about the man he has become and battles with himself as his best piece of work is plagiarized, but in a strange series of events, the story proves to be one that needs to be told, and provides him with the name and the platform that he needs to have his original work published and the fear that his work would never be as good as the manuscript he found.
Rory is so obsessed with becoming the best writer that he puts his work before his wife, Dora Jansen, played by Zoe Saldana, and doesn’t realize that he is taking their relationship for granted. Rory and Dora lives comfortably, peacefully, as Rory enjoys his fame, wealth and success without thinking too much about his dishonesty until he meets the Old Man, whose manuscript about his life in Paris post-World War II, he plagiarized and published without changing a word. The Old Man, played by Jeremy Irons, finds Jansen and introduces himself as the original author of the manuscript in a very humble way and only want him to understand the pain the he went through and the drastic, emotional reasons on why he wrote the book.
This movie has three stories interconnected: Clay’s story, Rory’s story, and the Old Man’s story, and all of these stories are very alike. If you are into romantic drama films, this is a great one to see because it explores how true love can overcome any obstacle; however, it also shows how you can learn to come to terms with your mistakes, even ones that can be detrimental, and still live a comfortable and successful life
