Making a Difference: SU students go above and beyond to give back to the community

As a graduation requirement, it is mandatory that all Southern University students enroll and pass the Student Service Learning course. This semester, students chose to give back to the community, along with obtaining more than the required amount of service hours.
“I am really proud of the students,” said Lori Hitchens, a Center for Service Learning Instructor.
“We wanted to give the students the opportunity to not only gain service hours but to actually give back, and the students were really interested in the fact that it didn’t only give them hours, but that it could actually help the community,” finished Hitchens.
Students volunteered at the “Movie Night in the Park” and a “Flashlight Hike” for Daddy’s Friday Night out which featured: Daddy’s Daycare on Friday August 28, and was hosted by Community Against Drugs and Violence Incorporation (CADAV) and Scotlandville Community Development Corporation (CDC). Over 40 students assisted in serving refreshments.
Continuing to give back through service, on August 29, students volunteered with the first phase of the Faith and Vision Clean up, hosted by the Outreach Ministry of Progressive Baptist Church. Students assisted with rotating 10 clients with temporary housing, job applications and placement assistance.

“ The Southern University Center for Service Learning students were awesome, and they really gave back to the community this weekend,” finished LeDuff.
