High School students from all over Louisiana and even out of state poured into F.G. Clark Activity Center Saturday morning November 14 for the High School Preview day. The host for the event was Willie McCorkle III and the music was played by DJ Big Kountry. Preview Day opened with a few popular selections from the Human Jukebox Marching Band and the Southern University Gospel Choir. The Gold N’ Blues also made an appearance and showed off their moves for the high school students. After these performances students were brought on tour of the campus where they learned the history of every building and what is studied there. They also learned the history of the campus as they walked around. Students also enjoyed a tailgate meal that was provided for them.
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Executive Director for Admissions & Recruitment, Anthony T. Jackson really hoped that students learned a lot from this experience and really find themselves on their journey to college as they consider Southern as their home.
“I want students to gain a better knowledge of what Southern University is, who they are as students, and how we can actually reach out and help them develop their college goals such as their career goals, and their life goal,” said Jackson.
Ezekiel Sam, a Senior at Beau Chene High School, had a lot to say about his experience at high school preview day and his college decision.
“My favorite part about High School Preview Day was being in an atmosphere where I felt like I was at home,” said Sam. “From the moment I stepped on campus I felt welcomed by everyone including faculty, staff, and the current students. I love the support the alumni still has for their alma mater. The best part of the day, though, was actually being able to see the Southern University Human Jukebox marching band up close in the band room as they warmed up and practiced to get ready for the game,” said Sam. “Being in the presences of a great HBCU for the day has really influenced my college decision. It also helped me get more information about my possible major and some other majors just in case I changed my mind. If I had to recommend a university to someone after this experience I would definitely tell them to consider Southern University,” said Sam.
