The heart of any college campus often lies within its cultural and artistic endeavors. For students and faculty alike, the theater is not just a space; it’s a platform for creativity, expression, and the magic of storytelling. At Southern University A&M College, the stage has been a cornerstone of their artistic heritage for decades. Now, thanks to a generous grant, the historic institution is set to undergo a dramatic transformation as it embarks on a journey to revitalize its beloved theater.
Executives and professors, Dr. Bonny Mcdonald and Mr. Douglas Streater of the Speech and Theatre program provided details of the renovation during a meeting with the Southern Digest.
The renovation project aims not only to refurbish the theater but also to enhance the overall student experience. Southern University A&M College’s Speech and Theatre Program has a rich history of producing outstanding productions, and with the new facility, students will have access to state-of-the-art technology and amenities that will allow their visions to flourish.
The $106,965 grant will fund a wide range of improvements such as the rigging system used to raise lights. The theatre will receive a much-needed facelift, with acoustics, and lightning systems to create a more immersive experience for both performers and the audience. The renovation will also prioritize accessibility, ensuring that the theater is welcoming to all members of the community. Southern University’s theater program is currently hosting “Task Tuesdays” in which students who are interested in joining can be a part of the renovation. “We’re enhancing Task Tuesday to boost our theater’s progress during renovations. We welcome extra hands for equipment, learning, and stage painting. Don’t hesitate to join us – you’ll discover new aspects of theater and gain agency and accountability,” said Douglas Streater. The new design will incorporate flexible spaces for rehearsals, workshops, and smaller productions, fostering creativity and collaboration among students.
The impact of this renovation extends beyond the college’s walls. The revitalized theater will serve as a hub for community engagement, hosting events, workshops, and performances that bring people from the surrounding area together.
In a world increasingly dominated by screens and virtual experiences, the renovated theater will stand as a physical testament to the enduring power of live performance. It will provide a space where stories come to life, emotions are evoked, and lifelong memories are created.
As the curtain rises on this new chapter, the SUBR community, alongside its supporters, eagerly anticipates the day when the theatre’s doors reopen, welcoming audiences to a space that is not only visually stunning but also a testament to the enduring importance of the performing arts. “I like the idea of them remodeling the theatre. Everywhere on campus is getting remodeled, so it only makes sense,” said Jaiden Foster.
The executive also let us in on a sneak peek of upcoming events. Bonny Mcdonald, Assistant Professor of Speech and Theatre Program, said, “We have plans for a Variety Show this fall using the space we have. We also have 2 major dates, one being the ‘Narrative Showcase’ on October 18th, and ‘It’s Giving Props’ in early November.”
In a world that sometimes seems divided, the theater has the power to unite, inspire, and remind us of our shared humanity. Thanks to this generous grant, Southern is poised to continue its legacy of artistic excellence and provide a stage where dreams take center stage and creativity knows no bounds. The future of the arts at Southern is brighter than ever, and the spotlight is ready to shine on its renewed theater.
