Homecoming season has arrived, and in the HBCU world, there is nothing like it. One event catches everybody’s attention…The Homecoming Game. Homecoming games are the most looked-forward-to game of a team’s season. No matter the sport you may play, there’s something about homecoming that brings a different atmosphere, especially to the gridiron. Of course, every team wants to win their homecoming game, but not all college teams are victorious. Homecoming brings out the fun and love within the team and community; However, it brings out the intense competition between each program. The home team wants to put on a good show for the fans, and you have the away team, who has a chip on their shoulder due to being scheduled for homecoming while trying to pull an upset. It’s also about bragging rights, just like if it was a rivalry game. Playing home unites a team while giving them that extra boost of confidence and swagger. Most college teams would love to have a blowout victory for homecoming, which is good for their morale, but overall, who wants to see a blowout in a game to keep the fans engaged and cheering them on? A blowout victory score-wise is good, but it all depends on the quality of competition on the opposing team. During a homecoming game, I feel as if the competition should be equal or balanced enough that a high-level game is played but also carries out the victory in the end as a home team. Although that’s not always the case, homecoming games should be fun and entertaining with a balanced level of competition. Just because it’s homecoming, it doesn’t mean the competition should decrease. No matter how good or bad your team is, you always rise to competition. At the end of the day, sports will be sports with or without homecoming, so give the fans a show they want to see; the atmosphere will remain the same.
