Bill Belichick and the Nick Saban GOAT debate has been ongoing for over a decade. The debate has grown more fuel since the retirement of Nick Saban and a look back on all of his accolades during his coaching tenure at the University of Alabama. However, Nick Saban did not start his career coaching at the University of Alabama, and Bill Belichick did not begin his coaching career as the head coach of the New England Patriots. The NFL and NCAA Football are also drastically different coaching-wise. The NFL coaches work solely on the team aspect, as in my opinion, college football coaches focus on the individual and team aspects.
Belichick began his coaching career in 1975 as an assistant for the Baltimore Colts. He later became the defensive coordinator for New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells in 1985. Being from the Bill Parcells coaching tree, meant he knew the game. However, when it came time for him to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1991, he finally felt what it was like being a head coach of fifty-three grown men. He finished with a 36-44 over five average seasons. He then coached under Parcells in Baltimore and then New York before becoming and declining the head coaching job for the New York Jets. He became the New England Patriots’ head coach in 2000, and the injury of Drew Bledsoe sparked the emergence of his backup Tom Brady. They went on to win six Super Bowls together.
Nick Saban had a different coaching experience. He coached under Belichick in 1991 with the Cleveland Browns and then returned to coaching Michigan State in 1995. He rebuilt the team and then was hired by LSU in 2000. He won his first national title there in 2003. He then had a stint with the Miami Dolphins in the NFL for two seasons and then took the position of head coach at Alabama in 2007. Saban went on to win six National Championships,
The Greatest Coach of All Time debate goes to Nick Saban. Two great careers both Saban and Belichick, respectively, but Saban was able to take hundreds, maybe thousands of student-athletes and raise men. When his men were in the wrong, he set them straight. He was always a great role model for his players. Belichick, I believe, struck gold in Tom Brady.
