Each of the 7 contestants who competed for the title of the 2024-2025 Miss Phi Beta Sigma scholarship pageant has a story to tell. There were five segments to the pageant: career showcasing, swimsuit, talent, dress, and interviews. In the end, the winner was chosen by five judges, and the event was ultimately driven by the contestants themselves.
Amina Booker, hailing from Dallas, Texas, was the first to grace the stage. As a Family and Consumer Science major specializing in Child Development, she not only showcased her stunning face and body but also exuded confidence and embodied the essence of a queen in every category. Following Booker was Sade Woods, a Psychology major hailing from Staten Island, New York. Her authenticity was bestowed on her.
The third contestant, Chelsea Hopkins, hailed from Port Arthur, Texas pursuing a degree in Secondary Education. She not only possesses an elegant and sophisticated demeanor as a Human Jukebox member, but showcases grace in her legs, hips, and body. Following was Phallon Broussard, a Nursing major hailing from Welsh, Louisiana. Her companions ensured that she was noticed, and her overall aura radiated throughout the room, especially considering her exceptional rapport with children. Kelsey Harris, a Nursing major with a minor in Child Development, hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, brought forth a unique blend of qualities. In addition to her knowledge and expertise, she exuded a distinct attitude and an unwavering passion for baton twirling.
The next contestant was Saige Pelichet, hailing from Rosedale, Louisiana, pursuing a degree in Psychology. Her radiance, “shining bright like a diamond,” her ability to connect with psychiatric patients, and her exceptional confidence in embracing her plus-size figure, made her a fan favorite. Finally, Jourdyn Reed who is a Mass Communications student specializing in Broadcast Journalism, showed her compassion alone is what fuels her passion for sports, and flexed an exceptional singing talent—okay Coco Jones!
The night was filled with music, dancing, and laughter thanks to the intrigue of audience engagement. Code Blue, the Southern University Stomp ‘n Shake Cheer team, provided an energetic intermission that seemed to delight the audience, and at the last moment of the evening, one radiant contestant was declared the winner and brought home the sparkling crown and scholarship.
After the contestants showcased their personalities and talents, Saige Pelichet was announced as the winner by the hosts. “My journey to becoming Miss Phi Beta Sigma was one filled with hard work, manifestation, and prayer. Thank you for all the cheers, screams, and support! The centennial queen has arrived, sorry for the wait!” said Saige Pelichet, a senior Psychology major. At the event’s end, all participants thanked the Rho Chapter of Phi Sigma Beta Fraternity for organizing the occasion.
Ty Willson, a computer science major, and a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, elaborated on the pageant’s goal. “Bringing back the Miss Phi Beta Sigma Pageant has always been a goal of mine. With help from an amazing support staff, I was able to bring this vision to reality. It is a very special year for us as we countdown to our centennial charter date and I knew we had to create an experience that was second to none. Long Live Rho Chapter and our cause speeds on its way!” Wilson said.
Another member of the fraternity, Jacauri Jones, a junior majoring in Civil Engineering, expressed his thoughts: “Rho chapter hasn’t hosted a pageant since 2018, and to be a part of the team that was able to bring it back in such grand fashion was a surreal experience. Rho chapter also had a chance to crown our Centennial Queen as we celebrate 100 years of being a black Greek letter organization on the campus of Southern University. From our contestants to our pageant committee, everyone who was a part of this event put in a tremendous amount of time, effort, and dedication. We are beyond grateful and appreciative of all the love, and support received.”
The hosts of the pageant worked throughout the evening to create a safe space by interacting with the crowd, putting on comedic performances, and exhibiting vast culture. The centennial pageant of Miss Phi Beta Sigma, according to the responses of the audience, signified the beginning of a new era
