Southern University has over 150 organizations for students with various interests that involve sports, Greek, academic, or major-related, there is something out there for everyone. However, this semester, there have been new organizations that were made on campus and one of them is the Chi Alpha Christian Organization. Chi Alpha is an organization for students to reconcile with Christ, equipping them through Spirit-Filled communities of prayer, worship, fellowship, discipleship, and mission to transform the university, the marketplace, and the world.
At Southern University, Chi Alpha missionaries James Price, Kelsey, and Tylus Smith always reach out to various students to have exciting and informal discussions with other students about God and what he does for us. Their purpose is to spread the word and get many to understand what, when, where, why, and how God provides for us and how if we Southern University students take the time to pray daily, read the word, and worship the lord, what he can provide us. That way students at Southern University who either struggle mentally, physically, and spiritually; or could have lived through such traumatic things will be blessed and live their lives better. Tylus Smith, an advisor stated “
On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 pm, Chi Alpha members get together and have bible study talking about various, lifelong messages that are written in the bible. These lessons are discussed for students to understand what god wants from us and how he wants us to live our lives through him. STUDENT QUOTE During each bible study, students are served various snacks such as chips, brownies, cookies, etc. so that students who did not have each lunch have something to snack on. On Thursdays at 6 pm Southern University’s Chi Alpha will have either an on-campus activity or family dinner. These events are usually for brothers and sisters of Christ to get to know each other while also having food and various games to play. Many students have an enjoyable time with the various games such as Spades, uno, the Nintendo Switch, etc.
Lastly, Chi Alpha also has a few retreats throughout the years where many students go to and grow closer with the lord and understand who they are as a person. One of the retreats that Chi Alpha attends is called SALT. SALT is a Chi Alpha retreat towards the end of every year across the USA for members to spend time developing a relationships with other people and reconnecting with God for a few days. This event provides various events and games for thousands of Chi Alpha members to participate in while also providing worship and service every day of the event.
Chloe Schultz, a member of Chi Alpha says “SALT was something that has had an impactful experience in my life. When I left, I felt like I was close to both God, but also other students because it provided me with a deeper understanding of how to develop my faith in the lord.” Overall Chi Alpha Christian Organization is a really enjoyable organization where students can get close and develop lifelong bonds in the future through studying together in God’s word, attending church and worshiping him, or just through the various Thursday dinners, there is something every student has to look forward to in this organization.
