With a new fall semester upon us here at Southern University, students came out in the masses on Thursday night to take part in our annual organization fair. Excited and eager, a sea of students took the plunge into the Event Center for the “Under the Sea” themed event. Everyone had the opportunity to speak with student leaders in their respective positions to see which organizations they gel with the best.
Students could also pick up a variety treats along the way to keep their energy up while making their rounds. It was almost hard to navigate the isle ways to see all that Southern has to offer because the room was so flooded with people. According to the Assistant Director of Student Greek Life, Winton R. Anderson, this was great problem to have considering two years ago the event had been in virtual due to the pandemic. He elatedly stated, “I am proud to say we have outgrown the Event Center so now we are going to have go to the Mini dome, hopefully. I feel great about the event overall. I think it was awesome!”
An interesting perspective shared from Anderson, where he felt like his position is a “calling of sorts”. “The work of student organizations is impactful,” he said, “while the academic side of the house
manages what happens in the classroom, Student Affairs gets to manage everything that happens outside of the classroom. Shaping the student leadership experience as well as the student experience overall; that’s what I enjoy the most about what I do-having a hand in shaping that experience.”
Hats off the to Office of Student Affairs for putting on an event that held a multitude of organizations for students to choose from. From Greek life, ROTC, SGA and everything in between there is something here at Southern for everyone. Our very own Miss Southern University, Briana Hall, was among the participants ready to greet new students to let them know all there is to know about our Royal Court. “My favorite aspect of the student org fair is meeting and exposing new students to opportunities that they may not have know about otherwise,” she said. First Vice President of the Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. Amaryia Jackson agreed with Miss Southern by saying, “ I love getting to meet new students that are ready to serve and get active in student organizations. It adds to the unique culture here at Southern.”
All in All, it looks like the future is bright here on the Bluff! Can’t wait to see what else is in store for the orgs here on campus!
