Fall is vastly approaching but the weather hasn’t hit us down south folks just yet. Although technically it is fall we are experiencing pre-fall weather. So instead of the all black everything, leggings and ugg boots, and crewneck sweaters, lets scale it down a tad bit for pre-fall ready to wear options.
Dusters and kimonos are light weight and minimal but super cute on those warm but breezy days we all love and appreciate. First, let’s decipher what a duster and a kimono really is. A duster is a light, loose-fitting long coat. Originally dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats. Today, dusters are pretty much the same but different patterns and designs that come in a lightweight design or a full-fledged coat. The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment. The word “kimono” literally means a “thing to wear” and featured in full length. The kimonos trending today can be long (floor length) or short (hip length) that is more than likely going to be produced in a sheer chiffon fabric. The sleeves on the kimono range from short, quarter, and long sleeved. For a pre-fall look, pair a duster or kimono with a dark washed jean, ankle boot with a short stacked heel and a lightweight tee. To complete the look, add a wool hat, preferably in dark colors such as black, dark burgundy or wine, or a light color such as a slate grey. These colors were some of the on trend colors for last fall/winter season and have transitioned throughout spring and summer. I’m a big advocate on dusters and if you’re feeling the boho bohemian vie then the look from the summer dusters will be your go to item in your closet, with the addition of kimonos of course. Make sure you rack up!
T-shirt dresses and buttons down are the entire grunge, and from the runways of New York and in stores such as Urban Outfitters, the grunge look is still in. T-shirt dresses are comfortable, cool and easy to wear on a bright sunny day. To turn this look into pre-fall, I’d go with a heavier button down such as a flannel instead of a jean button down that I would do in the spring or summer; then add on a cool plain beanie. As far as footwear is concerned, aged shoes are your best bet. The best shoes that age the coolest are Van and Converse. The more wear you get out them the better they age. During the “Grunge” age of the 90’s, the style was all about how much they didn’t really care about their appearance, but at the same time dressed really cool because they didn’t care. In order to keep up that look, of course the essential thing to do is to tie that button down around your waist. The real cool kids did that.
Light sweaters and shorts are very pre-fall for the south. Light sweaters and breezy cotton shorts in a floral pattern is a great get up and go outfit. To elevate this look visually add a black bralette or bustier that slightly pulls through the sweater to add depth into the outfit. Along with a silver gem or natural stone necklace and round black sunglasses should be your go to accessories. Pair with booties or gladiator sandals to complete this look.
Distressed boyfriend jeans and logo shirts or light weight crewnecks are the chilliest pre fall look of the season. As it gets closer to actual winter, it is cause to bundle up a little bit more. This outfit is great for day and night, paired with laced heeled booties or single sole heels, you can wear this to class or to go out and everything in between. This look is very versatile because you can mix and match any of these garments with the other styles thus creating more looks and who doesn’t love more looks?
