“You know, maybe if I had the luxury of getting my a** whooped, I could be calm right now. But I have been drinking tequila shots, my hormones are raging out of control, I’m emotional, I’m horny, and I don’t want to hear about no gotd**n peas! F*** you! Good night!”
After over fourteen years of trying to convince movie producers and Hollywood to make a sequel to one of the most classic African-American movies of all time, the cast and Malcolm D. Lee finally got their shot! According to Rotten Tomatoes movie review: sequels are rampant in Hollywood, but it’s rare to see a sequel produced almost 15 years after the release of the original movie. This happens when a movie has a fan base, and filmmakers and cast members are eager to revisit an earlier opus. The Best Man was a hit in 1999, partly because it appealed to a more upscale A
African-American audience than Hollywood ordinarily acknowledges. The sequel to the notorious movie, “The Best Man”; a story about Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs) who wrote a book that had several unsavory fictionalized characterizations of his real-life friends during their college years. These friends all take it in good stride when they talk to Harper face-to-face, but their hurt causes at least one of them to want to teach Harper a lesson. Jordan Armstrong (Nia Long) learns that Harper’s book is unabashedly flattering in its portrayal of a character based on her, however, she decides to test the waters with Harper at this vulnerable stage. To make matters worse, Harper had an affair with Mia (Monica Calhoun), Lance’s bride-to-be while in college. Lance (Morris Chestnut) doesn’t know, and Harper is anxious to keep it a secret.
This movie helped a lot of actors make their way in Hollywood! This was Regina Hall’s first big movie, and it helped Terrence Howard make a big mark in Hollywood. Furthermore, it opened the door for more opportunities for him and the rest of the cast.
Now the friends are back, and so many things have changed! Yet, there are still some things that even with time passing them by, remains the same.
This motley group of former college buddies, lovers and antagonists gather to spend Christmas weekend at Lance’s gargantuan country estate; the first time they’ve been reunited since Lance’s wedding 14 years earlier. A wealth of old jealousies and hostilities remain waiting to be unearthed, complicated by the fact that Harper, suffering from writer’s block and money woes he’s kept secret from his wife, has agreed to write an unauthorized biography of his famous host.
Some are married, Harper’s wife (Sanaa Lathan) is pregnant, Jordan (Nia Long) is trying to commit to a new guy in her life, and Julian (Harold Perrineau) is newly married to Candy (Regina Hall). However, the tension between Harper and his former best friend Lance (Morris Chestnut) is still in the air; even years later after the discovery of the secret that occurred in their college days. And now, drama unfolds between Julian’s ex-girlfriend Shelby (Melissa De Sousa) and wife Candy, because Shelby is still scorned from their breakup. And Quentin (Terrence Howard)? Well, he’s still living it up!
Want to see if Lance whips Harper’s butt again? What about if Shelby and Candy get into a catfight, or Harper and Jordan renew their love? Go see The Best Man Holiday, it’s worth the wait and worth the price of admission!
