On February 25, 2026, students gathered at the F.G. Clark Activity Center for Southern University’s Spring Career Fair, where dozens of employers offered networking opportunities, internships and job information for potential hires. The career fair aims to connect students with companies from various industries, helping them to map out their career journey after college as well as get insight into their career paths related to their major.
Not only does the career fair connect you with potential employers, but it can help you prepare for the future and gain practice when applying for companies and learning how to sell yourself. Sophomore Civil Engineer major Dwayne Scott says he finds the Career Fair to be very beneficial and helps pick up skills like being confident in a professional setting, helped with his speaking skills and overall says, “It made me feel more prepared.”
When going into these career fairs, it is important to come prepared such as bringing your resume, looking presentable, and being ready to network for your benefit. Brian A., a Bridge Engineer recruiter says when he’s recruiting, he’s looking for certain quality in students.
“Highly driven and motivated, someone who seems happy to be here, who has a experience with extracurricular actives and volunteer hours and also I make notes on their resume so when I bring them to the hiring manager they can see more about these people when we’re deciding who we want to reach back out to, for other students who don’t bring a resume it makes it hard for us to remember them or to stand out to us,” explained Brian A. Sophomore Computer Science major Rhian Rainey says she felt well prepared attending this career fair, helping her to secure possible interviews.“It helped me gain a lot of practice and now I look forward to reaching out to tech companies,” she emphasized.
Start now. It is important that students attend these career fairs and network with these companies, so they’re knowledgeable about all the potential paths out there for them and gain experience networking. Samuel Ross, Program Coordinator for the Career Services here at Southern University gave us an insight on how they often plan to host these career fair every semester, with the purpose of helping guide students and setting them up in a good position to get a job after graduation. Ross suggests that students sign up on the Handshake website and complete their profile. This website allows you to find internships and potential jobs.
“I love when we get freshman in our office already trying to secure internships and seek out potential jobs; they’re ahead of the game,” Ross expressed. He also says how Southern has built standing relationships with these companies, with them often revisiting and recruiting students from Southern.
