A key component to a meaningful organization is its service to those around them. The Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. is an example of an organization who has continued to serve its community with countless initiatives. One of their current initiatives is Project Cradle Care. This national initiative focuses on supporting underprivileged mothers who may lack the resources for a healthy childbirth. The Basileus President of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Chanel Sims, a graduating senior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies, and Project Cradle Care Chair Jada Smith, a Level 1 Nursing student provide insight on the purpose of Project Cradle Care.
“Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s Project Cradle Care is one of our essential programs designed to raise awareness of disparate and inequitable material and infant health outcomes Black Women endure through community outreach, advocacy, education, and implicit bias training. In so doing, we aim to mitigate outcome and life-course disparities in our communities”, explained Sims.
“The purpose of Project Cradle Care is to support the health, safety, and well-being of expectant mothers, infants, and families, especially those in underserved communities. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. seeks to empower mothers with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to experience healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries, and successful early parenting”, explained Smith.
“This project is a national project that is available to all within the organization to donate and contribute. We make sure that we extend this project to our local communities and beyond to be able to provide ongoing support to women and their families. We love to collaborate with other chapters, organizations and anyone else who is willing to join our call to help others”, explained Sims.
“Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. remains committed to advancing maternal and child health, and there are ongoing plans to expand Project Cradle Care as well as introduce additional initiatives addressing family wellness, paternal education, and community support. During the spring we also contribute to black maternal health week to show out initiatives for women’s wellness and project cradle care. Our Organization continuously evaluates community needs and looks for opportunities to collaborate with healthcare providers, nonprofits, and local chapters to further strengthen its impact in the years ahead”, explained Smith.
With Project Cradle Care, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. is able to provide resources and knowledge to the less fortunate. These are necessary in building communities and ushering in the next generation.
